Every obstacle you face has a secret to tell you

By this time, most of us have already let ourselves down — we’ve already tossed our New Year’s resolutions to the curb, albeit grudgingly.

I don’t say this to make you feel like shit about yourself. It’s just a fact. Most people (more than 90%) give up on their New Year’s resolutions. There are many reasons for this, and we need to re-evaluate our approach to accomplishing our goals (I write about this here). But, that isn’t what this article is about.

When we set out to do something new, like eat more healthfully, get more exercise, start a writing practice, or save money, we’re full of motivation and passion. We’re excited to make a change.

Unfortunately, all this energy eventually fizzles out, doesn’t it? Then, suddenly, you no longer have that drive you once had to go to the gym or find a healthy recipe or sit down and write. You hit a wall, so you slide back into your old routines and your old habits. Then, your resolution quietly dies.

You might wonder, If I’ve set a goal I truly care about, how could I just give up on it at the first sign of trouble?

Humans have probably been asking themselves questions like this one for as long as we’ve had the words to construct them.
