Why You Can’t Find the Motivation to Pursue Your Goals
How to make motivation work for you.
To achieve your goals you need to create new habits. But, as we all know, creating new habits is one of the most difficult things a human can do. Change is hard at the best of times, and I’m not sure it gets any easier the more you do it!
You might wonder why it’s so hard to change. To answer that question, put yourself in evolution’s shoes. If our minds were easily changeable, we’d discard useful life strategies that we learned from our parents, teachers, and peers on a whim, and turn to new ones that might not be as effective. As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Our biology is centred around surviving, not thriving. After all, if we’re dead, we can’t pass on our genes and the game’s over. So, nature has created within us a fine balancing act — we stick to tried and true strategies until something pushes us to change.
So, if you want to change, you need a big push. It needs to be powerful enough to get you over the biological hump of maintaining the status quo.
This can feel impossible at times, but we all can change. We see people do it all the time! It’s just that most of us don’t understand how change works — not even the people who are successful at it!
