The Pursuit of Happiness Isn’t All It’s Cracked up To Be

The pursuit of happiness. The American Dream. This much sought-after way of life has set alight the imagination of the world over.

And why not? A life full of happiness sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? It sounds like paradise, right?

But what if the pursuit of happiness – as the end-all-and-be-all of existence – isn’t all that rewarding? Worse still, what if pursuing happiness distracts us from pursuing something even more valuable — something less elusive and not dependent on our accomplishments, the house we live in, or the car we drive?

What if we don’t need to wait to experience the best of life?

What if what we’ve been seeking all along has been right in front of us this whole time?

The pursuit of happiness is dissatisfying

If the pursuit of happiness is dissatisfying, we’d notice, wouldn’t we? I mean, we couldn’t all be wrong about something so important, could we?

And yet, we’ve been wrong before, haven’t we? About equally, or even more, important things.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is to not learn from the past. People once tolerated slavery…
