Sometimes You Need to Look Backward to Help Yourself Move Forward

How feeling proud of your progress can help motivate you to achieve your goals.

I recently met someone who kindly offered to share my resume with her many contacts in the writing world. But, no sooner had I sent her my resume than she sent it right back. Please describe your experience on Medium, she said, Not all relevant experience is for money.

Call me naive (and perhaps a little dense) but I hadn’t even considered putting the work I’ve done on Medium on my resume. It didn’t strike me as something that belonged there. It felt too personal.

It only took a moment’s thought, however, to bring me around to her way of thinking. She’s right — why wouldn’t I include all this writing experience on my resume? I’ve spent a lot of time on Medium cultivating my craft and improving my technique. In retrospect, it seems absurd to have excluded it!

So, I spent some time perusing my published articles and looking at my statistics, which caused me to encounter something I did not expect — pride. And this has shifted something within me. Something important, because I’ve been more excited and motivated to write ever since.
