My First Meditative Insight Came When I Least Expected It
It was during a spin class!
I’ve been meditating daily for nearly four years now. I don’t sit for long — only 10 to 15 minutes per day, but I love it. On the rare days when I don’t meditate, I feel out of sorts. Meditation does make life feel better for me.
I’ve often heard about people who meditate having insights into the nature of their minds — profound realizations that change how they think about themselves and the world. Yet, after 46 months of daily meditation, I’d never come close to any such realization. Now, I haven’t been meditating for the purpose of having one of these experiences, per se, but I wouldn’t have scoffed at the idea of having one, either!
All this changed just the other day.
Spin class is brutal
If you’ve ever been to a spin class, you know how deadly they can be. The instructors are constantly pushing you to increase the resistance, the beat of the music is loud and relentless, and, for me at least, that other people are working hard inspires me to do the same. All this comes together for one hell of a workout.
