How You Can Make a Difference in This World

It’s not as hard as you think.

When we want to make a difference, we often come up with grand schemes, don’t we? We think about how to end poverty. We wonder about how to slow or stop climate change. We ponder about how to close the growing gap between our political parties. We contemplate how to create community and fellowship in our cities and nations.

The thing is, these problems are enormous. They tend to involve so many moving parts that our actions can seem pointless. While we all have opinions about these things, how can we, individually, make much of a difference? How can we, individually, do anything of consequence?

While some of us pursue careers and volunteer work to help resolve these issues, I think many of us feel helpless. And that’s not necessarily an irrational perspective. I mean, we can all make a difference with our actions, but they sometimes feel so small and inconsequential that the extra effort seems futile.

What if it isn’t as difficult as we think it is to make a difference? What if all these grand schemes are simply a distraction from actions we can take today to change the world around us? What if making the world a better place isn’t really that hard at all?
